CrossFit Newbie

I still remember my first CrossFit class.

I was terrified walking into an open garage door revealing a huge gym with a bunch of athletes, big muscles, and barbells being thrown around. I watched in awe and awkwardly waited around for the next class to start. A few people introduced themselves to me and I felt a little more comfortable. Then class started and the next hour was filled with new movements I had never done, tons of sweat, and thoughts of “this is terrible and what the hell am I doing?!”

As I was leaving the gym after that first class, I found myself laughing about how hard it was with the others in class and I couldn’t wait to come back the next day. The soreness those first few weeks was intense, but everyday after the workout I found myself excited for the next day, new movements, and connecting with more people.

I fell in love with the tough workouts where I pushed my body more than I thought I could. I increased my confidence each class I attended and found myself slowly getting stronger and not dying after 3 burpees. (Even though burpees still suck 6 years later). I truly fell in love with the community. There’s something about working out in a class full of people where you struggle together, sweat together, and encourage each other to get through those last 5 reps. Come early and stay after class, make conversation with as many people as you can. Bond over your love/hate relationship with wall balls. Forming friendships in the gym will keep you coming back even on days you don’t want to step foot in the gym. I wouldn’t be in New Mexico if it wasn’t for the friendships I formed while at CFUE. These people are more than just friends, they are family.

Starting CrossFit is scary, but the thing is we all are newbies at one point. We all know what it’s like to be intimidated the first couple weeks and to feel absolutely clueless sometimes. We’ve all said “what’s a snatch again?” or “can you demo that one more time?” Soak up all the knowledge you can, talk to those people in class you’ve never talked to before, and be PROUD of yourself.

Approach your CrossFit journey, burpees and all, with open arms and you’ll be surprised how it impacts your life. I hope you’ll fall in love with it too.
